Does Gemstone Origin Matter?

A Maker’s Perspective on Burmese Rarity

As someone who works closely with natural gemstones every day — selecting, sketching, and setting each one into a piece meant to last generations — I often return to one simple truth: where a gemstone comes from does matter. But perhaps not in the way most people expect.

My roots, both personal and professional, are in Myanmar — a land long revered for its rich deposits of rubies, spinels, sapphires, and peridot. As the designer behind CAROL Jewels, Burmese gemstones are not just part of what I offer — they’re the soul of my work.

There’s something unmistakable about a true Burmese ruby: its warmth, its inner fire, the way it catches the light without ever feeling artificial. The same goes for our vibrant pink spinels, once mistaken for rubies themselves, and now celebrated in their own right. These stones carry a kind of quiet intensity that no lab report or marketing trend can replicate.

And yet, the conversation around origin can sometimes get lost in generalizations. Just because a stone is “from Myanmar” doesn’t guarantee it holds the beauty or quality that collectors seek. That’s where my role becomes deeply personal. I handpick each gemstone — from trusted sources within the country I know intimately — not because of what the label says, but because of what the stone itself reveals: clarity, colour saturation, natural glow, and that intangible something that makes it unforgettable.

It’s easy to get swept up in buzzwords. “Burmese Ruby” has become a phrase that carries weight in the global market. But what matters more is authenticity. Provenance, yes — but also ethics, quality, and the hands that shape it. At CAROL Jewels, every gem we work with tells a real story: not mass-produced, not trend-chasing — just honestly rare, and deeply ours.

So does origin matter? For me, absolutely!

because Burmese gemstones aren’t just where I source from. They’re where I come from. And that makes all the difference.

Each gemstone I choose is more than just beautiful — it’s a reflection of where I come from, and the legacy I continue to shape with every piece I design. If you're drawn to the quiet rarity and heritage of Burmese gemstones, I invite you to discover what makes them — and your story — truly one of a kind.
